Finding community when you work from home

Practical, mostly free ways to feel less isolated when you work alone — none of which require joining anything.

By Kevin Iveson · Published

Independent business opportunity — not employment and not a holiday-booking website.

Why it matters

Working alone can quietly wear people down. Missing casual conversation, feedback and a sense of belonging affects mood and confidence. If loneliness is affecting your mental health, speak to your GP or use impartial support — a business is not a treatment or a cure.

Free and low-cost ways to connect

  • Co-working mornings at a library or community space.
  • Local volunteering, which builds connection and skills together.
  • Free professional networking groups and meet-ups in your field.
  • Online communities around a skill or interest, with clear moderation.
  • A regular call or walk with a former colleague.

Business communities, honestly

Some people find genuine support inside a business community, including Kevin's. That should always be a bonus, not the price of belonging. Good communities welcome questions, respect a “no” and never make friendship conditional on joining or buying.

A healthy community will…

  • welcome you whether or not you buy or join anything;
  • respect boundaries and time away;
  • encourage questions and outside advice;
  • never use belonging as pressure to decide.
